It is not the way of the western culture to understand Inuit drum as they understand their own drum: the conductor of the music. And the anthropologists interpretation are not either correct! The anthropologists observation and then their conclusion is based on their culture and background to compare the way inuit use their drum and songs. And that lead to the big misunderstanding of the Inuit way of life and how the Inuit understands the life. The way the inuit кilaut is made – from the beginning – is to be connected to the ancestors and descendants; especially to be connected to the creation of the Creator.
The vision of a Shaman the fellow hunters followed to catch a certain animal in a certain place at a certain time. And from the side bones of that animal and stomach skin it is made a кilaut (the drum). Кilaut means the consciousness and an opener to the heaven of the consciousness. When it is used in proper way it opens your “heaven” to be connected to your ancestors and descendants as there is not time existing but the life of everything and life is all!
Our ancestors and descendants are the creators of all the moons and planets but all the universe and other universes are created by the Creator. That is why you have to be connected to your ancestors and descendants to be connected to the Creator – you all call the God. And that is why it is very important to build a “drum” in a certain way to be able to use it as a connector – to open the heart, mind and spirit. Your ancestors and your descendants are guiding you through the visions to build a кilaut to be connected to guide the living beings on the Earth (all and everything are living beings on the Earth: plants, animals, the air, the fire, the earth, the water etc.)
The drumming is the heart talking and the songs are from the universe giving to you to be connected to your ancestors and descendants who are more close to the Creator. The drum and the songs are your “shelters” to be able to travel all over the universes where no time and distance exist – only life.
Inuit call the skin of the drum “an eye” – the collector of all information and visions. Of course you don’t always understand the information and it is better to be observant and listener instead of interpreting the information. Until you understand the information you tell – not before than that. When you interpret you may be wrong and misinterpret the information – it happens often as we think and see with human made values mind and thinking. We often need the control instead of being an observant and listener and try to dictate people into our power and values. This is dangerous! When this mind only destroy life and control the human mind – only to benefit of our values and mind not to the benefit of life.
The кilaut is guiding us to guide the life of beings – when they ask to be guided. The guidance is not about where the Shaman is but where the human mind is … and not pulling the human mind into you, as the human mind needs its process to be able to grow and prepare for its able to go on and take its own step …
Everybody is part of life and very important part of life to be the part of the creation – even the Shamans are “normal” people but with a certain task. Everybody is important to our ancestors and descendants as they are born to give their descendants to live the life to give their process a change to grow. With this you give a life a chance to be better – not only for beings on the Earth but also in our own galaxy and universe.
We are here on this Earth to believe in life not in the human made values.
Ingmirutit - Inughuit drum songs
Inughuit Native traditional songs “ingmirutit” (reloading the old memory) are inherit and pass on through generations to generations for several of ten thousands of years. The songs are from our ancestor who fell from heaven before there was a moon. As other beings born on the Earth we all forget our inherit life from our ancestors and live the life “lost in our mind”. It happens, too, with my ancestors; they also forgot at that time their inherit life.
People were coming to the Arctic without any inuit drums and songs and with no joy only hard work to survive. It was at that time when the moon was young, at that time when human being could turn into the animal, and animals could turn into the human being. It is a long, long time ago. At that time our ancestor Naujarpak (The Giant Seagull) who was living in the top of the mountain Pingurhuit (pyramid like mountain top covered with stones) with her son. She was the last one of our ancestors of many who inhabited the Earth a long, long time ago and still had the memory of our ancestors’ life. But she was so old and was about to leave the life on the Earth. She was so sad that the human being was too busy keeping up on everything to survive their own values than to stop and listen to her about the heritage from the ancestors before she left the Earth life.
The old inuit couples had a son who went out hunting for his old folks and came close to the mountain. Then suddenly there was a young tall stranger wearing the bird cloth – (these people could be invisible but could appear anytime, anywhere and anyhow) – and asked him if he wish to follow him to the top of the mountain where his old mother lived. The old woman was happy to meet a person who wish to listen to her. She began to open her arms and spread them out. Her arms became wings of a Giant bird. The feathers began to move as if the wind was blowing through them. The young human being was watching what was coming out of her feathers. He saw the stars, galaxies, suns, drums, songs coming out of her feathers.
When he returned to his folks he told about his vision and would invite all the people to join him when the moon turn blue (super moon). Then when time came couples from different direction approached to attend the festivity. They were all showing their ancestors the respect by drumming and singing their songs and the ancestors were dancing like the northern light to show their appreciation. When the festivities were over the people were returning to their places and returned to their origin life as the animals all over the Arctic.
As mentioned the songs are from the Universe where our ancestors are living. The songs are about life, feelings, expressions, entertaining, right, everything about being a part of creation.
We are the descendants to sing the songs to get the old memory back to remember our ancestors to greet them, and our lost memory and life can be healed to heal to a whole life.
Nominated to Unesco World Heritage list
Greenland's Self Government had nominated Greenlandic Inuit drum songs to be listed in Unesco World Heritage list and wrote their apply to the Danish Government. And the apply of nomination was pass on by the Danish minister for culture to Unesco World Heritage list to be listed in 2021.
In our history, we know that as Europeans crossed the seas to other continents and "discovered" new lands and people, they demanded their "discovery" and colonised their "discoveries" without asking the people of the land. In their demand of their "discovery" included the inhabitants should adapt to the new culture and new language of the "discoverers" and abandon their own basics of life and culture in their own country and land. If not the consequences were horrible to the aboriginal habitants. We know the written story. Especially the unwritten story.
Through the several centuries being colony the influence of the colony power increased when it has had several centuries to feed the colony with their imperialistic system - especially culture imperialism: the most powerful tool to indoctrinate the mass through their representatives from the colony power employed in various leading public administrations.
When missionaries came to Nunarput (Greenland) the first they told the natives was: "abandon your savage culture when it is no good for nothing!" and showed them how to destroy their drums. When the missionaries began to teach children their teachings of their religion the missionaries were telling children not to believe their elders and their savage beliefs. The missionaries used the children as informers if there were still people practising their savage culture. If so later on they confronted those people publicly and embarrassing them to show their supremacy.
It was and is the easiest way to keep the suppression was and is to split people to make mutual "clashes" by "encouraging" the pro colonists habitants to do the work for their purpose. And these forces are more threatening than the colonists when it is splitting the aboriginal people by creating inter-conflicts. The same practice was used by the Christians by sending two preachers that were non educated theologists to mission the northern and easter part of Nunarput. These preachers were instructed for three months for the purpose and decorated with the cassock as uniform for their mission. But their real hidden agenda was the absolutely sovereignty of whole Greenland to be the colony of state Denmark. This story is telling how the states are abusing their power and the religion to gain their power.
This hasn't change since then but mutated to other kind of manipulations and abuse of power. Now mostly the "locals" are doing the same work for the state by manipulating the mass to believe that Inuit culture is demolishing and threatening the progress and democracy. The same practice used for hundreds of years but using of the "new values" to fight the Inuit heritage.
This is why it is of great importance to preserve the heritage that is being endangered by these forces by adapting it to Unesco Heritage lists.
